DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters (SAF) will host its 10th Annual Fall Symposium on Friday, Oct. 21 from 7:30 am to 5 p.m. in Environment Hall’s Field Auditorium on Duke’s West Campus.

The symposium, titled “An All-Lands Vision: Engaging Large Private Landowners in Landscape Conservation,” will feature talks and panel discussions by seven leading professionals or researchers who work in various aspects of forest conservation.

The event, which is sponsored in part by the 91 Forest Finance Initiative and the Nicholas School of the Environment’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations, is free and open to the Nicholas School and Duke communities, but registration is required.

RSVP by Friday, Oct. 14.

The symposium has been approved by SAF for 5.0 Continuing Forestry Education credits.

Laurie Weyburn, co-founder, co-CEO and president of the Pacific Forest Trust; will present the keynote address.

Jeffrey Vincent, interim dean and Clarence F. Korstian Professor of Forest Economics and Management at the Nicholas School, will present welcoming remarks.

Other speakers will include:
* Paul Trianosky (MEM’93), chief conservation officer at the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc.;
* Rolf Diamant, retired superintendent at the National Park Service and adjunct associate professor at the University of Vermont;
* Cherie Kearney, forest conservation director at the Columbia Land Trust;
* Brian Dangler, director of the Working Forest Fund at The Conservation Fund, and
* Dean Urban, professor of landscape ecology and senior associate dean of academic initiatives at the Nicholas School.

Trianosky will also lead the “Next Steps and Solutions” panel discussion that will conclude the symposium.

Breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be provided for registered participants. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m.; talks will begin at 8:15 and discussions will end at around 3:30 p.m.
An informal networking reception will immediately follow.
