The Ferguson Family Distinguished Lectureship is presented annually by the Nicholas School to bring to Duke major thought-leaders to speak on topics of significant social and environmental import. Past speakers have included EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, former Vice President Al Gore Jr., and energy visionary Amory Lovins.
Sally Jewell was U.S. Secretary of the Interior under President Obama from 2013 to 2017. During her tenure, she was recognized for her science-based collaborative approach to natural resources management. Her work included championing the importance of science and sharing data to better understand the earth鈥檚 systems; encouraging investments for more sustainable use of water in the West; and the long-term conservation of the nation鈥檚 most vulnerable and irreplaceable natural, cultural and historic treasures. She has committed herself to connecting people鈥攑articularly youth鈥攖o nature, with efforts to encourage young people to play, learn, serve and work on public lands.
Previously president and CEO of REI, Jewell also has served in commercial banking and began her career as an engineer in the energy sector. She has been active in governance and board leadership for corporations and nonprofit organizations, including serving as a regent of the University of Washington where she is a Distinguished Fellow in the College of the Environment.
