Small-scale fisheries and fishing communities have often been ignored and marginalized in decisions about who can use the ocean. As global human activity accelerates and industrializes, these communities are at risk of being “squeezed” in many places. Dr. John Virdin, Director of the Ocean Policy Program and Assistant Professor in the Division of Marine Science & Conservation, will discuss his ongoing research on measuring the importance of small-scale fisheries to society and studying government efforts to “secure a safe space” for these aquatic food production systems.
