The 91社区福利 Marine Lab maintains three research vessels for charter, available to faculty, graduate students, and researchers at Duke and other academic institutions, and community partners.

This state-of-the-art scientific vessel has a large working deck equipped with an A-frame, winches and crane, as well as a 16鈥 auxiliary boat. The interior includes both wet and dry labs, galley and meeting space. The R/V Shearwater has capacity for 30 passengers for day trips (15 passengers for overnight accommodation), and may be employed as either an Inspected Passenger Vessel or an Oceanographic Research Vessel.

Vessel design along with a rip-stop polyurethane covered ballistic foam collar provides strength, rigidity and stability. Additional features include deck space for 360掳 observation, bow mounted (removable) tagging platform, fully enclosed walk-around cabin, and four roll-control dive tank holders. This vessel may be chartered and operated by Duke faculty, faculty from other academic institutions and graduate students conducting faculty sponsored research.

When employed as an Inspected Passenger Vessel the Kirby-Smith may carry passengers for any purpose and must be operated by a USCG Licensed Master. When employed as an Oceanographic Research Vessel, the Kirby-Smith must be engaged solely in research or educational activities and may be operated by faculty or graduate students.
