DURHAM, N.C. – Erika Weinthal, Lee Hill Snowdon Professor of Environmental Policy at 91ÉçÇø¸£Àû’s Nicholas School of the Environment, has helped develop a on Environmental Security and Sustaining Peace for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Weinthal will serve as one of the core faculty members for the 8-week massive open online course (MOOC), which provides an in-depth introduction into the multiple roles that natural resources and the environment play in the onset, escalation and resolution of, and recovery from, violent conflicts.

The course covers a range of natural resources, from extractives to land and water, as well as different tools and approaches – from conflict and gender sensitivity to assessments, meditation and spatial planning. It also includes detailed information on security risks from climate change.

Enrollment is now open for course, which begins March 1, 2018. Students who successfully complete it will receive a certificate.

Weinthal is a member of the UNEP Expert Group on Conflict and Peacebuilding.
