DURHAM, N.C. – Ten students at 91’s Nicholas School of the Environment have received monetary awards to help fund international internships this summer.

The students, who are all pursuing Master of Environmental Management (MEM) 91s, each received awards of more than $1,000 to cover the costs of travel associated with their internships.

“This funding allows students the opportunity to engage in research and internship opportunities abroad which might otherwise be too costly for them to pursue,” says Erika S. Weinthal, associate dean for international programs and Lee Hill Snowdon Professor of Environmental Policy.  

Support for the awards comes from the Nicholas School International Internship Fund, the David Brower Endowment Fund, and the Kuzmier-Lee-Nikitine Fund.

This year’s recipients are:

* Caitlyn Cooper, an MEM in ecosystems science and conservation, who will conduct research on lemur conservation with Centre ValBio in Madagascar;

* Gina Daniel, an MEM in ecotoxicology and environmental health, who will pursue an internship through the Geneva Program in Switzerland;

* Chuwen Liang, an MEM in environmental economics and policy, who will work with Environmental Defense Fund in China;

* Roosevelt Mesa, an MEM in coastal environmental management, who will intern with the Colombia Ocean Commission’s Division of Antarctic Affairs in Bogota, Colombia;

* Megan Nicholas-Harper, an MEM in water resources management, who will conduct an internship on water quality issues at Nemberala Beach Resort on Indonesia’s Rote Island;

* Rajah Saparapa, an MEM in environmental economics and policy, who will conduct household surveys to better understand residents’ attitudes toward conservation for the Agence Nationale de Gestion de l’Environnement in Togo, West Africa;

* Tara Stout, an MEM in global environmental change, will take part in the Summer School for Future International Development Leaders in Udaipur, India;

* Bella Tan, an MEM in energy and environment, who will intern with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s Sustainable Energy-Clean Energy initiative through the Geneva Program in Switzerland;

* Celeste Whitman, an MEM in environmental economics and policy, who will research water and energy consumption in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Communities with Griffith University in Australia; and

* Emilia Hull, an MEM in global environmental change, who will intern with the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development’s Bridges Weekly Trade News publication through the Geneva Program in Switzerland.
